NANOOSE LIBRARY CENTRE

NANOOSE LIBRARY CENTRE

Nanoose Library Centre sits at the heart of Nanoose Bay above and almost opposite the school. If you have ever driven past the little log cabin and never stopped to explore, here are 10 things you might not know:

1.         In 1974 the library first opened, housing 1000 books donated by a founding member. A New Horizons grant enabled members to build shelves, winterize the cabin and ‘staff’ a loan desk and the Library Centre was open for business.

2.                  The ‘Friends of the Library Society’ was formed. As a result of major fundraising activities, the land and cabin were purchased outright in 1976. With the help of a second New Horizons grant, volunteers felled trees on the land and built the adjoining rustic hall.

3.                  Assisted by large donations of books and money together with the friendly support of regional libraries, Nanoose Library Centre was later able to help those establishing similar libraries on Hornby Island, Franklin River, Fanny Bay and Ucluelet.

4.                  The Nanoose Library Centre is managed by a volunteer board of directors and the library staffed by a small group of dedicated unpaid helpers.

5.                  Planning an event? The Library Centre also has a large ‘rustic’ hall with full kitchen and washrooms providing the perfect venue for weddings, family celebrations, meetings, conferences and training courses - and all for a minimal cost! Enquiries: Please contact Shelagh-Ann tel. 250.618.8558

6.                  The Library funding depends on occasional grants, tax-free donations and, most importantly, fundraising events and annual membership fees which represent fantastic value at are only $5.00 per person.

7.                  Fundraising events such as the Giant Annual Book Sale, the Spring and Summer Flea Markets and the Christmas Bazaar are just some of the calendar dates that continue to fund a steady supply of books to the shelves

8.                  And did you know that up to 60 new books arrive on the shelves each month? These are largely based on members’ requests and contemporary best seller booklists. In a year of recession, why not borrow the new books you want to read from your local library!

9.                  The Library is open afternoons Tuesday to Saturday between 1.00 - 4.00 pm. On Thursdays and Fridays it is also open in the morning from 10.00 am - 1.00pm

10.              The annual subscription is still only $5.00

So why not stop by now and visit your local Library!  Our friendly team of helpers offers a warm welcome to the Nanoose Bay community.
